Alice Swartz (Marsh) Shafer, 94, of Hamilton Township, died Sunday afternoon, November 6, in her home. She was the widow of Edwin James Shafer, Sr. with whom she shared 43 years of marriage at the time of his death in 1977.
Born on October 19, 1917 at home in Stroudsburg, she was one of thirteen children of the late Edward J. and Helen (Mosier) Marsh and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County.
She was a member of the Neola United Methodist Church.
Alice enjoyed baking, gardening, going with her best friend Gladys Neyhart to auction sales and going to flower shows in Philadelphia. She helped to raise her grandchildren and was always busy taking care of family and friends.
Surviving are four children, Jean Elizabeth Rutt, of East Stroudsburg, Jennie Cora Snyder of Wind Gap and Carl Henry Shafer and Lois Jean Smith both of Stroudsburg; 20 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 23 great great grandchildren; a sister, Florence M. Dennis of Palmerton and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Edwin James Shafer, Jr. on October 4, 2009 and her eleven siblings.
There will be a viewing from 10:00 to 11:00AM Thursday, November 10, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg. The funeral service will begin at 11:00AM Thursday at the funeral home followed by burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Hamilton Township.
